Vaidyaratna Dr. Chndrasekhar G. Thakur: Vitiligo or ‘Shweta Kusta’ is most misunderstood as far as Ayurvedic scientific treaties are concerned. Popularly called ‘Safed Dagh’ or Leucoderma is never mentioned in Ayurveda as ‘Kusutha’ (Leprosy).
Far from it, in Ayurveda18 types of Maha Kushta (Leprosy) are mentioned. The panicky fear is due to word ‘Kodha’. In fact for white patches, which is pigmentary disfigurement, Ayurvedic is upveda or 5th veda. Branch of Atharva veda which dates back to 1500 B.C. or more. In Atharva veda swetha Kushta is referred. Later on Charak in general and Sushruta in special referred to this in detail and use of BAVCHI-Ens Purple Flenbane – or (Psoralea Corylifolia) is mentioned. The Bavchi is used externally as well as internally both. Col. Chopra and Dr. Basu used and have the opinion as fellows:
“So far as is known P. Corylifolia is the only drug which has a dduel action on both Roagets cell and the melanoblastic cell of the skin. In Leucoderma….M. Cell…. Objective of Vitiligo Cure In USA and worldwide

The objective of treatment of vitiligo is to satisfy the cosmetic needs of the patients and provide emotional security. In India where vitiligo carries a dire social stigma nearly all patients nearly all patients desperately wish to be treated. Among fair skinned Caucasian’s, however treatment may be optional and simple reassurance may suffice.
Despite much detailed knowledge of biochemistry and physiology of melanin pigmentation, there is a lack of regularly effective, predictable and safe methods for controlling the degree of melanization of the skin.
Nevertheless, until the necessary further advances are made to achieve such control, many disorder of pigmentation can be managed at least with partial success by taking due precaution and carefully chosen therapeutic measures.
In the management of patchy hypomelanosis, the contrast between normal and deficient melanized areas like exposure to sun, to chronic irritation, to repeated trauma (as people with vitiligo diathesis have tendency to develop vitiligo even on slightest trauma ). Otherwise cosmetic problem of such hypomelanosis is best handled by cosmetic making agents, pancake make –ups or stains.
The management of vitiligo is not purely medicinal but conservative treatment is also a must along therapeutic measures.
The most important step in conservative treatment is PSYCHOTHERAPY, both of patients and his relatives.

1. As already sated in preface the vitiligo patient loses confidence and start considering himself inferior to others. People around him also add to his misery by isolating him. This they do from sheer ignorance about the disease. Since ancient time this disease is being considered as leprotic in nature. Hence the belief that it is infectious and hereditary which generates fear in the minds of people and the patient. The patient. The patient remains so depressed that the dose not take the medicine properly ,dose not take proper precautions .thus to increase the general awareness of the people by making them Understand the non INFECTIIOUS and NON-HEREDITORY nature of the disease is an Important step towards management of the disease without which cure is impossible.
   
2. Patient should be strictly instructed not to take ANTIBIOTICS especially broad spectrum antibiotics during any intercurrent illness. Patient may feel that the antibiotics have helped him in remains the disease and provides hindrance in the path of action of our remedies.
   
3. As long as the cause is overlooked, no disease can be cured. likewise whenever the Etiological factors.

Symptoms of Vitiligo in American and worldwide patients

Interestingly there is a constant figure remains mostly in the areas of effected persons between 1 and 2 percent of the world, however, there is no such limitations on age factors as there may be cases at the age of 80 or new born babies. But, places where darker skin people are settled and high exposures of sun has been mostly affected to those concern areas and have found high figures in females than males.

Generally, Vitiligo can be affected either on age wise or area wise. In fact, females are more affected due to their cautiousness towards maintaining of physical and facial beauty and at such time the reverse reaction due to the imbalance diet or over utilizing make ups of facial and skin develops de-pigmentation of skin cells changing towards various sizes and shapes on the skin and gradually appearing as irregular white patches either specific parts of the body, face, arm, lips, etc or whole body. Therefore, there are about 50% of them are females mostly suffering from this disease. Hence, the reasons behind is clearly detected as stated above.

There are cases rooted from their ancestors and this may reactivate even after a generation gap, when checked history proves that his/her forefathers have been affected with this disease. In addition to this observation, we can also mention that where the sun exposure is high and the people where their skins are darker found more prone towards effecting Vitiligo as much as 30% either transferring from hereditary or originally to those darker skins.
