vitiligo - Definition fro Answers.com

Definition:
Vitiligo is a condition in which a loss of cells that give color to the skin (melanocytes) results in smooth, white patches in the midst of normally pigmented skin.

Description:
Vitiligo is a common, often inherited disorder characterized by areas of well-defined, milky white skin. People with vitiligo may have eye abnormalities and also have a higher incidence of thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus, and pernicious anemia. Vitiligo affects about 1-2% of the world's population. It is more easily observed in sun-exposed areas of the body and in darker skin types, but it affects any area of the body and all races. Vitiligo seems to affect men and women equally, although women more frequently seek treatment for the disorder.

Vitiligo may appear as one or two well-defined white patches or it may appear over large portions of the body. Typical sites for generalized vitiligo are areas surrounding body openings, bony areas, fingers, and toes. It can begin at any age but about 50% of the time it starts before the age of 20.

vitiligo symptoms and vitiligo treatment in USA (United State of America) and worldwide

Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition which appears due to the cause of destroying skin pigmentation. As Michael Jackson the King of pop told “I have a skin disorder that destroys the pigmentation of the skin (vitiligo), it’s something that I cannot help”.

Generally, Vitiligo can be affected either on age wise or area wise. About vitiligo skin disorder researchers and doctors have the different theories.

• One theory is that people develop antibodies that destroy the melanocytes in their own bodies.

• An analyst presents a theory that melanocytes destroy themselves.

• Dr Deepak Chopra says “if children have experienced physical or verbal, mental, emotional or sexual abuse, then 20, 30 years later they can develop these autoimmune diseases including vitiligo and lupus”.

• Some people have reported that a single event such as sunburn triggered vitiligo.

• Dr. Wadia says, females are more affected due to their cautiousness towards maintaining of physical and facial beauty and at such time the reverse reaction due to the imbalance diet or over utilizing make ups of facial and skin develops de-pigmentation of skin cells changing towards various sizes and shapes on the skin and gradually appearing as irregular white patches either specific parts of the body. Therefore, there are about 50% of them are females mostly suffering from this disease. Hence, the reasons behind is clearly detected as stated above.

However, these events have not been scientifically proven to cause vitiligo.

Experts say that 40 to 50 million people have vitiligo in the world and 2 to 5 million people in America alone have been suffered from vitiligo skin disorder disease.

we can also mention that where the sun exposure is high and the people where their skins are darker found more prone towards effecting Vitiligo as much as 30% either transferring from hereditary or originally to those darker skins.

Exclusive: Photos of Michael Jackson Show Signs of Vitiligo and Needle Punctures

Expert Tells ABC News Needle Puncture Marks on Jackson's Leg in 2002 Photos Are 'Very Unusual'
By LAUREN SHER and TERI WHITCRAFT
July 14, 2009

Exclusive photos of Michael Jackson obtained by ABC News show a serious wound on the pop star's right leg, which a medical expert said appears to be surrounded by unusual needle punctures.

"On the photographs of Michael Jackson, it looks like there was necrosis on his lower leg where there might have been fluid that went into his lower leg," a possible result of an IV that had leaked into the leg, Dr. Debra Jaliman, a leading dermatologist and spokeswoman for the American Academy of Dermatology, told ABC News.

"It looks like there are multiple puncture points from IV placement," she said.

The wound seen in the photos, which were taken in 2002, could have been a result of contact with highly caustic, acidic fluid that would burn the skin and cause it to turn black, Jaliman said.

"If, in fact, he had an IV here, and the IV fluid, which may have been acidic fluid, went into his skin, it might may have, in fact, destroyed the skin," she said. "That's all dead skin that would then make an ulceration underneath that skin."

In the photos, Jaliman highlighted areas of blue discoloration in Jackson's leg and puncture marks, which she said point to needle entry.

'I've worn make-up since I was four'

By Jane Elliott
Health reporter, BBC News

AdvertisementElana Kelly says make-up has been her lifeline
Few of Elana Kelly's friends have seen her without make-up.

But that isn't because she can't face the world without lipstick and mascara.

Elana has vitiligo and has rings round both eyes that are lacking skin pigment.

She has worn make-up every day since she was a small child - but she has decided to take all her make-up off for adverts to raise awareness of the reality of her skin condition.

Now hundreds and thousands have seen her face, but Elana says she still feels too sensitive to stop wearing her "camouflage" in her daily life.

"There were periods when I wished I was able to tell people about my condition," she said.

"But now, even at the age of 29, I don't want to go out on the streets without my make-up.

'Too exposed'

"There are millions of people who do wear make-up each day for different reasons and I am just one of them, but I don't feel I could go out without my vitiligo covered up, which sounds pretty sad.

"But it is just the way it is for me.

"Wearing no make-up for the ads was good. I had been in front of strangers without make-up for a short-time, but with the video a much wider range of people have seen it.

"Of course my family have seen me before without make-up, as has my boyfriend and some very close friends.

"But even people I work with haven't, so doing the advert was a big deal for me."

Psychological damage

The advert, by the Vitiligo Society aims to raise awareness of the condition, which affects half a million Britons like Elana.

It leaves them increasingly vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun and can also often have a dramatic psychological effect.

Elana, an admin worker from Essex, said the family first noticed she had a problem when she suffered a cut above the eye at the age of three.

The scab healed, but the pigment never returned and gradually the problem grew worse, eventually affecting both eyes.

She said her parents were keen to protect her from any bullying and so researched make-up.

"As a child of four, I have to admit that I was blissfully unaware of any difference between other children and myself.

"I never experienced any animosity, cruelty or name-calling and for that I must be eternally grateful, as not everyone is so fortunate.

"It is only when you are a teenager and start staying over at other girls' houses that it becomes a bit of a pain having to put the make-up on and take it off, and I did not feel comfortable telling people who were not in my family.

"And when you are a teenager it is all about how you look," she said.

Michael Jackson's glove was to hide (vitiligo) skin problem

On July, 9 2009 CNN presented a news about Michael Jackson vitiligo:

Actress Cicely Tyson, a friend of Jackson's, said the two shared a fashion designer in the 1980s.

"All of a sudden, he said, 'I'm doing this glove for Michael,' " she said. "Michael was beginning to develop the vitiligo and it started on his hand.

"The glove was to cover the vitiligo; that's how that glove came into being."

Jackson's dermatologist, Dr. Arnie Klein, told CNN that Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a disease that causes blotches of lightening skin, as well as a form of lupus that led to rashes and flaking of skin on his scalp.

Michael Jackson was diagnosed in 1986 with vitiligo, a chronic skin disease that causes loss of pigment resulting in irregular pale patches of skin.

Michael Jackson told Oprah in an interview on February 10, 1993. that he has a skin disorder disease vitiligo that destroys the pigmentation of his skin.

Michael Jackson talks on his vitiligo

Michael Jackson did many interviews with Oprah Winfrey in different years. Likewise he gave

an exclusive interview to Oprah Winfrey on February 10, 1993 about his skin disorder disease

vitiligo. He gave many explanations about treatment and clarified many miss concepts which

were popular among the population.

Michael Jackson on Vitiligo:

Oprah: Llet's go to the thing that is most discussed about you, that is, the color of your skin...is most obviously different than when you were younger, and so I think it has caused a great deal of speculation and controversy as to what you have done or are doing, are you bleaching your skin, and is your skin getting lighter because you don't like being black?

Michael Jackson: Number one, as far as I know of there is no such thing as skin bleaching. I have never seen it, I don't know what it is.

Oprah: Well they used to have those products, I remember growing up always hearing "always use bleach and glow", but you have to have about 300,000 gallons.

Michael Jackson: OK, but number one, this is the situation. I have a skin disorder that destroys the pigmentation of my skin, it's something that I cannot help, OK? But when people make up stories that I don't want to be what I am it hurts me.

Oprah: So it is...

Michael Jackson: It's a problem for me that I can't control...but what about all the millions of people who sit out in the sun, to become darker, to become other than what they are. No one says nothing about that.

Oprah: So when did this start? When did your...when did the color of your skin start to change?

Michael Jackson: Oh boy, I don't....sometime after Thriller, around Off The Wall, Thriller, sometime around then.

Oprah: But what did you think?

Michael Jackson: It's in my family, my father said it's on his side. I can't control it, I don't understand. I mean it makes me very sad. I don't want to go into my medical history because that is private, but that's the situation here.

Oprah: So OK, I just want to get this straight, you are not taking anything to change the color of your skin?

Michael Jackson: Oh God no, we tried to control it and using make-up evens it out because it makes blotches on my skin. I have to even out my skin. But you know what's funny, why is that so important? That's not important to me. I'm a great fan of art. I love Michael Jacksonangelo, if I had a chance to talk to him or read about him I would want to know what inspired him to become who he is, the anatomy of his craftsmanship, not about who he went out with last night....what's wrong with....I mean that's what is important to me.

Oprah: How much plastic surgery have you had?

Michael Jackson: Very, very little. I mean you can count on my two fingers. I mean let's say this, if you want to know about those things, all the nosey people in the world, read my book Moonwalk, it's in my book. You know, let's put it this way, if all the people in Hollywood who have had plastic surgery, if they went on vacation, there wouldn't be a person left in town.

Oprah: Mmmm, I think you might be right.

Michael Jackson: I think I am right. It would be empty.

Oprah: Did you start having plastic surgery because of those teen years because of not liking the way you looked?

Michael Jackson: No, not really. It was only two things. Really, get my book, it's no big deal.

Oprah: You don't want to tell me what it is? You had your nose done, obviously...

Michael Jackson: Yeah, but so did a lot of people that I know.

Oprah: And so, when you hear all these things about you, and there have been more...

Michael Jackson: I've never had my cheekbones done, never had my eyes done, never had my lips done and all this stuff, they just go too far...

Oprah: Are you pleased with the way you...

Michael Jackson: I'm never pleased with anything, I'm a perfectionist, it's part of who I am.

Oprah: And so when you look in the mirror now and see the image that looks back at you are there days when you say I kinda like this, or I like the way my hair...

Michael Jackson: No, I'm nev...

Oprah: ....or I'm kinda cute today...

Michael Jackson: ...(giggles)...cute today....no, I'm never pleased with myself. No, I try not to look in the mirror.

Causes of Vitiligo

Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color. Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of pigment-forming cells known as melanocytes. The exact cause of the destruction of the pigment-forming cells (melanocytes) in the skin is not known. One possible explanation might be that the body's immune system destroys the cells, as in other autoimmune conditions. Although vitiligo affects all races equally, it is more noticeable in dark-skinned people, like Africans but in white skin people it affects less than black people.

Comments of an American residence about vitiligo cause:

Jose Ferny-Project Manger at BPO tells to http://www.antivitiligooil.com about his son who has vitiligo in New York USA;
I have an eighteen year old child. He has suddenly developed Vitiligo on face and others parts because he play too much football and cricket in the sun. We do not have any family history of vitiligo so it basically developed due to sunburn.
